DEI Strategy Development for ASEBP

The Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan (ASEBP) is a non-profit organization that provides health benefits and services to Alberta’s public education sector workers, both working and retired.  ASEBP hired Dr. Gary Broils to conduct a DEI assessment of its programs, staff, and partners.  The engagement included determining knowledge gaps to develop a training strategy to educate ASEBP’s management and staff regarding the importance of valuing DEI in the workplace.

Goals:  The goal of the project was measuring the organization’s strengths and areas for improvement across various dimensions of DEI and taking a data-driven approach to develop DEI programming and a training strategy based on best practices in the field of DEI.

The Process:  Dr. Broils and his team used a combination of tools and methods to collect and analyze data on ASEBP’s DEI practices and performance. Some of the tools and methods include:

  • A DEI self-assessment tool that measures the organization's strengths and areas for improvement across various dimensions of DEI, such as leadership, culture, strategy, planning, evaluation, community engagement, training, etc.

  • A survey of the ASEBP's management and staff to assess their perceptions, attitudes, and experiences related to DEI within the organization and external stakeholders.

  • A focus group of the organization's employees to elicit their feedback, stories, and suggestions on how the organization's programs and services have influenced their work performance, as well as their sense of belonging and empowerment.

  • A review of the ASEBP's documents, policies, and procedures to identify gaps and opportunities for enhancing DEI in its operations and governance.

  • A benchmarking analysis of similar organizations and best practices in the field of DEI.

Outcomes:  Dr. Broils and his team synthesized the data and findings and produced a comprehensive report that highlighted the organization's DEI achievements, challenges, and recommendations.  This DEI assessment report provided ASEBP valuable insights and feedback on its DEI practices and performance, as well as a roadmap for future action and improvement.  After the assessment project, ASEBP engaged Dr. Broils to help define a DEI training strategy and conduct a workshop for its leadership team.  ASEBP credited their focus on DEI as one of the reasons why the organization was recognized as a Top 75 Employer in Alberta for 2023.
